Continental Medical Solutions and Your Computer-aided Knee Replacement Surgery AbroadOur hospital partners’ Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeons are SPECIALISTS primarily in Knee and Hip surgery. Patients undergoing surgery can therefore be assured that their personal surgeon has the very highest levels of skill and Orthopaedic knowledge -- and is NOT a General Practitioner or Registrar operating under supervision! Today they are performing Knee Replacement Surgery using the ‘state-of-the-art’ technique of Computer-Aided Navigation System. The surgeon benefits from the directions received and of an analysis of the patient’s bone profile registered on the computer. On the basis of the bone profile, the computer guides the surgeon on the shaping of the knee bones. The Computer-Aided Navigation System also directs surgeons when aligning the patient’s bones and joint implants thereby obtaining an extraordinarily high degree of accuracy – otherwise unobtainable in Knee Replacement surgery. The technological advance of the Computer-Aided Navigation System in knee surgery also reduces the risk of mal-alignment of the bone structures - from the ankle, knee and hip joints. Mal-alignments are the main cause of knee revision surgeries – over the short and long term. Combined with Minimally Invasive Surgery - typically performed through an incision averaging 6 inches down the centre of the knee, instead of the average 8 to 10 inch incision - means that potentially there will be less damage to the tissue around the knee; and the return to a normal active life can, therefore, be anticipated within a realistic period of 6 to 8 weeks. The knee replacement procedure is performed using a Blood Recycling System avoiding the necessity of pre-operative blood banking, and operative and/or post operative blood transfusions for the patient.
