Your Minimally Invasive
Hip Replacement Surgery Abroad
Our Hospital Partners’ Orthopaedic Surgeons are SPECIALISTS in all aspects of Hip surgery and pioneers in the Hip Re-Surfacing technique. Patients undergoing surgery can therefore, be assured that their personal Surgeon has the very highest levels of experience, skill and Orthopaedic knowledge – and is NOT a General Practitioner or Registrar performing complex surgical procedures under supervision! Our Hospital Partners' facilities are registered with the French Health Ministry and each offers an environment of the highest quality where patient confidence can be assured – from the operating theatre to the cleanliness of the bedrooms. The individual incidences of MRSA and Clostridium difficile (Superbugs) at these hospitals in 2005/6 was effectively ZERO (compared, unfortunately, to the UKs increases of 39% and 69% respectively)!
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Many patients can now choose Minimally Invasive Surgery - (MIS) when Hip replacement is the chosen treatment of the patient and their doctor. The MIS technique - which we now consider to be the normal approach with Hip Replacement Surgery - is a relatively small incision made on the thigh ( 3-4 inches, instead of the traditional 12-14 inches) through which adequate access is afforded, when using modern ‘state-of–the art’ equipment, to prepare the Hip joint and insert the prosthesis, which comprises an extremely high quality uncemented titanium stem and ceramic ball. The procedure is performed using a Blood Recycling System thus avoiding blood transfusion to the Patient.
MIS and Posterior or Anterior Approaches
The Orthopaedic Surgeons are SPECIALISTS (primarily in Hip surgery) and well practiced in performing operations using the Posterior Approach and the Anterior Approach - two Surgical Hip Replacement techniques - that are now procedures used in conjunction with MIS surgery. Using either of these two Approaches the Surgeon is afforded access through the natural interval between the gluteal muscles attached to the pelvis and femur -- THE MOST IMPORTANT MUSCLES FOR HIP FUNCTION. Being left undisturbed the gluteal muscles do not, therefore, require a healing process to recover from surgical trauma. These two Approaches allow the patient to immediately bend the hip joint freely and bear full weight when comfortable, resulting in a more rapid return to normal function.
Pre-Surgical Consultation
Hip surgery procedures are undertaken following a detailed pre-surgical consultation with the SPECIAIST Surgeon and his professional staff. The final decision to operate and the approach method will be determined by your Surgeon at this consultation, as will be the type of prosthesis to be implanted. The method of anaesthetic, epidural or general, is discussed between yourself, your Surgeon and the anaesthetist, according to your medical condition and personal wishes.
Blood Transfusions
Surgical Hip procedures are performed using a Blood Recycling System. Pre-operative blood banking and operative or post-operative blood transfusions are NOT required.
The Advantages of Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Surgery
- Significantly reduced operative and post operative muscle trauma
- Smaller and more discreet incision (3 to 4 inches)
- Reduced risk of post operative dislocation
- Reduced post operative pain
- Faster recovery
- Rapid return to a normal life
